Islamabad, Pakistan – A long-anticipated infrastructure milestone is finally moving ahead! The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has greenlit the construction of a new 3.4-kilometer road linking Margalla Avenue directly to the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1)—a project that promises to transform connectivity between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
A Game-Changer for Twin Cities Connectivity
This strategic link will stretch across 1.6 km in Islamabad and 1.8 km in Rawalpindi, forming a smooth and efficient passage between Margalla Avenue and the GT Road (N-5). The entire project, costing Rs. 5.45 billion, is spearheaded by the CDA and includes both road construction and land acquisition.
With traffic congestion worsening on major arteries, this project offers a timely solution. It will serve as a six-lane bypass, reducing pressure on existing routes and enabling faster travel between key residential and commercial hubs.
📐 Key Project Highlights
- Total Length: 3.4 km
- Land Required: 181 kanals
- 51 kanals in Sangjani (Islamabad)
- 130 kanals in Badana Kurd (Rawalpindi)
- Status: Land acquisition in progress
- Completion Timeline: Estimated 8 months after construction starts
- Budget: Rs. 5.45 billion
The land acquisition phase has already begun, with compensation packages to be announced soon. The new road route strategically avoids densely populated residential areas, addressing community concerns that stalled earlier proposals.
🛣 Margalla Avenue’s Revamp: A Broader Vision
The Margalla Avenue project, originally envisioned to connect Bhara Kahu to GT Road, has long faced delays. However, this new segment linking to the M-1 Motorway signals a renewed push to revitalize Islamabad’s master plan and improve accessibility to future development zones.
“This road is vital to fully utilize Margalla Avenue,” confirmed Syed Nafasat Raza, CDA Member Engineering. “Once land acquisition is done, we’ll begin construction immediately.”
