Rawalpindi is on the brink of a transformative era with two ambitious projects aimed at improving urban infrastructure and enhancing municipal services. The DREAMS-1 (Developing Resilient Environments and Advancing Municipal Services) project and the Rawalpindi Ring Road initiative are set to reshape the city, promising better living standards and sustainable growth.
DREAMS-1: Clean Water for 1 Million Residents
On Thursday, Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, Engineer Aamir Khattak, reviewed the progress of the DREAMS-1 project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Punjab Government. This Rs35 billion project aims to deliver clean drinking water to approximately 1 million residents, a significant step toward resolving Rawalpindi’s water challenges.
Key Features of the DREAMS-1 Project
- Water Supply from Chahan Dam
The project will source 25.8 million gallons of water daily from the Chahan Dam, reducing the city’s dependency on over-exploited groundwater resources. - Solar-Powered Infrastructure
A 20-megawatt solar power system will ensure sustainable energy for water supply operations, lowering costs and reducing the carbon footprint. - 92,000 Metered House Connections
Modern metering systems will ensure equitable water distribution while addressing non-revenue water (NRW) losses. - Enhanced Water Quality Standards
Water management will align with WHO and NEQS standards, guaranteeing safe and clean water for all. - Revenue Generation
With improved efficiency, WASA is expected to boost its revenue by Rs100 million per month.
The project, which started last month, has already achieved 5% progress and is on track for completion by December 2027. Commissioner Khattak stressed the importance of maintaining transparency, quality, and timely execution to minimize inconvenience for residents.
Rawalpindi Ring Road: Boosting Connectivity and Economic Growth
In parallel, the Rawalpindi Ring Road project is moving forward under the guidance of Director General RDA, Kinza Murtaza. Consultations with the business community and the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) highlight the project’s collaborative approach.
Objectives of the Rawalpindi Ring Road Project
- Traffic Decongestion: The project aims to alleviate the city’s chronic traffic congestion by providing an alternative route for commuters.
- Economic Growth: By enhancing connectivity, the Ring Road will stimulate economic activities, attracting investments and promoting trade.
- Modern Infrastructure: The initiative represents a step toward building a resilient and future-ready urban landscape.
A Vision for Sustainable Urban Development
Both the DREAMS-1 and Rawalpindi Ring Road projects reflect Rawalpindi’s commitment to sustainable urban development. These initiatives promise to enhance municipal services, improve living standards, and create a more resilient city.
